Dear Mr. Nemnan,
In response to your letter requesting a method
of grading Colonnal Currency in ray forthcoming auction J wi.ll
attempt to give you a brief resiime of hov; I arrived at grading
this very difficult series,
A piece that is graded as good should be acceptable
in any collection for it means that there are no pieces torn from
it although it may have been folded and may have seen considerable
wear. Nevertheless it does made an acceptable piece to add to ones
collection. A fine piece is generally unfolded with a rather
bright clean appearance. Crisp uncirculated of course is obvious
and in the case of fair pieces these shovr very ranch wear and probably
have pieces torn or other imperfections too difficult to describe
in an auction catalog.
I make no mention whether or not they are cut
cancelled excepting I believe in one case where a bil], was not
cancelled which was very unusual for the particular piece. The
notes may or may not be cut cancelled either with the slits or the
large round holes.
You can very well understand that there is a limit
to space a cataloger may give this material in any auction sale
due to its low price.
Always glad to hear from you.
Sincerely yours.

Dear Mr. Newnan,
In my March 19i49 auction sale, I had a half
dozen lots of Contemporary Counterfeits of Continental Currency.
Checking back on ny records I find that you piorchased three of
them .
As I have written a paper on some of these
counterfeits which is to be published in the Numismatic
Scrapbook shortly, I learn that lor. Hewitt would like to
illustrate se^veral specimen. I am wondering if it would be
possible to borrow these pieces from you so that they can be
photographed. If it is agreeable to you credit will be given
for the loan of these pieces.
With kindest regards, I remain
Sincerely yours.

Dear Mr. Katent

rary Cotmterfoits of Continental Currency and exam-
ined all of Mr. Richardson's collection and his inter-

counterfeit item*. I presume you would be inter-

ine and counterfeit and April 11, 1778, t4.00 and #40.00,
both genuine and counterfeit. I have kept a meaeran-
duB of the numbers of the bills in question. Please
return those promptly after they have served your
purpose.
I also have in ray eolleotion blue sheets of almost
every issue which are positive certifications of all
genuine Continental notes. If you need any blue sheets
for comparison, please let me knew.
Incidentally, if you are having photographs made, I
would enjoy having a print of any you make.
If you have nothing better to do, please look through
your English halfpennies of George III between 1776
and 1788 and see if you have any available.
I am very glad to be of help to you.
Sincerely yours.

I wish I could oblige you, but I
sold my entire collection to a collector who

Dear Mr. Katen:
In your book list, I believe you should eliminate the
category of ”Massachusetts*’ . Most of the items belong under
"Colonial” and anyone looking under Colonial will miss the
Massachusetts Colonial items.
You also do not list any other urisdictions so I sep-
arate out Massachusetts.

Dear Mr. NeT^.an:
Thank you for your kind words for the book list in
COIM WORID, I appreciate praise coming from a master of the pen
and numismatics*
What you say about eliminating the catagory of "Mass-
achusetts" is correct. Each successive year since the first issue
written by Mr. Joimson, I have debated vrith myself on including
the few books on the subject under Colonial Coins.
Hot-; you have crystalized my think jjig. It shall be
done vrith the Seventh issue.
Best wishes, I remain

Dear Frank end Laurese:
Enclosed you will find check covering the
recent auction purchases.
Our library requires unbound cor ies of
THE NUMIB'^aTIST for a couple of the issues of 1910.
We filso could use some of the earlier issues in
unbound form. If we could get them we would
have aveilahle a set of bound volumes of THE
NU^'IFMATIST from about 1900 through 1915, as we
do not wish to keep bound volumes.
If we send you an exact list of our wants,
would we be able to work out something which
would be mutually beneficial?
Do you have any loose NUMISMATISTS of the
early period available?
Sincerely yours.

Dear Mr. and Mrs, Katen:
In accordance with our correspondence, I am
enclosing a list of the NUMISMATISTS I have, showing
what I want, and what I will part with.
My suggestion is that I give you two numbers
for each one number you find of my needs. Would
that be all right with you?
In addition, I am interested in acquiring
Vol. 2ii, No. 3 of A.J.N.
I am also interested in acquiring a Heath’s
Counterfeit Detector, both in the small edition
and the Counting House edition, in any years of
editions I do not already have. They must be
complete .
There are other items which I need but I
believe this is enough to get started on.
Kindest regards.

Dear Frank and Laureaet
In your auction of May 23, 1969 I received your
bill for Lot Mo. U32 for $85.00 plus $1.20 packing.
When the lot arrived it consisted of one book,
being D & H Parts k through Part 6 in which was bound
the Water's notes. I presumed that I was buying the
complete ’’D & H publication as described in the catalogue
and I was wondering where the rest of it is. The bill
indicates that only one parcel was sent as the postage
on the parcel I received was 70^^.
Would you please check up on where the miss-
ing portions are and send them to me.
Please let me have your prompt cooperation.
Sincerely yours.

Since ray recent return from ray vacation, I
had hoped to see you at the A,". A. convention and
talk to you about the D -k H volume.
Frankly, I was very disappointed that I did
not get e complete set and I thought you might be
able TO find the other books.
It seems to me that the one volume is virtually
wort: less, alone, and if it belongs to the estate,
that they ought to let me keep it in view of the
sit'.’ot on, rather than soend a lot more money shipping
it. b’hat are you going to do with it if the book is

I sincerely regret the inconvenience caused you by
the error in Lot No. U32. However, I must get this lot back
so that it can be sold (under the conditions outlined by you
that parts of the book are missing) to a friend of the con-

ering that only 200 copies were published.
At the above price you may have first choice if you
care to buy it, otherwise please return the book insured for

May I hear from you by return mail?

Mr. Frank Katen
P. 0. Box 4047
Silver Spring, MD 20904
Dear Frank:
Lot 51*2775 In the auction of October 18, 1982 had a broken
run of 10 items of Mason’s Coin Collectors Herald. I find that Vol. I,
No. 1, had a missing page 7-8 and was thus incomplete. The average
price for each number was $17. Do you think I should have a credit for
that sum? Your consignor should be satisfied in view of that situation.
I, therefore, am remitting toward your billing of $175.55 only $158.55.
If you think otherwise, please advise me.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Eric P . Newman

Dear Eric:
I read somewhere that you published a monograph
on Coinage for Colonial America.
If available I would like a copy. If so, please
send it along with your invoice.
If not available, could you give me the details
for my upcoming World-wide Bibliography?
Author, title, printed where, date, pages. Illus-
trations or number of plates, if bibliography, dustjacket, etc.

Dear Frank:
It was so nice seeing you and your wife and sister in Orlando.
Your September 3, 1992 letter asks about a book I edited. I
only wrote part of it.
It is Studies on Money In Early America (NY 1976),
Eric P. Newman, Editor
Richard G. Doty, Associate Editor
It has 12 articles and an Introduction. I wrote two of the
articles. It is extensively illustrated. Each author provided notes
as he saw fit. It has 216 pages.
